The program was launched in the city's pier at an event today attended by U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), as well as members of the community of commercial fishing and other notable personalities.

The "Fishing for Energy" initiative is a partnership between Covantes Energy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. to help communities Coastal reduce the amount of derelict fishing gear that ends in the nation of the oceans.

Abandoned fishing equipment can endanger marine life, affect the safety of navigation, and have serious economic impact on shipping and coastal communities. Since the program was launched in February, more than 80,000 pounds of fishing nets, trawling gear, crab pots, and fishing line were collected and converted into energy.

"This collaboration and innovative project which will in turn endanger the environment and the burden on local fishermen an opportunity to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and grow our economy green", U.S. Senator Whitehouse said.

Rhode Island is home to a large commercial fishing fleet, which landed more than 108 million pounds of lobster and fish and shellfish valued at $ 92 million in 2006. The city of Newport is home to one of the largest fleets in the state.

"The Atlantic Offshore Lobstermen Association of the (AOLA) has worked diligently to bring" Fishing for Energy "to Rhode Island," said Bonnie Spinazzola, Director of AOLA. "This program is the solution to the industry's serious concerns about that to dismiss abandoned gear retrieved from the ocean floor, and when to dispose of floating groundlines. We are excited to help the industry and the ocean environment and us pleased that the gear will be used to create energy for the general public. "

Covantes work closely with the city of Newport and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and AOLA to coordinate the removal of abandoned local coastal waters, as well as assisting the teams who are retiring is no longer fit for use within of a fishery.

Paul Gilman, Chief Sustainability Officer for Covantes Energy, said he was encouraged by the response that the program had received by Newport and other communities.

"We are delighted that Newport has taken this important program as a way to help our oceans. They are proving valuable leadership as stewards of one of our most important resource," said Gilman. "As a company committed to improving the environment, Covantes is proud to join Newport and our partner program to convert the problem of unwanted waste into the oceans clean and renewable energy."

Once removed from the environment, the art will be shredded into a facility and transported to Schnitzer Covantes of southeastern Connecticut-Energy-waste facilities that will be converted into electricity at no cost to the city.

Bass

Largemouth fishing has improved at many of the lakes and ponds across the state. Good reports for bass from Pattagansett Lake (several more than 4 pounds), Hatch Pond (more than 30 largemouths and smallmouths for one angler) and Long Meadow Pond (many fish, one 4 pounds, 13 ounces). Highland Lake and Park Pond report many fish caught but not very large. Other areas reporting fair to good fishing for largemouths are Candlewood Lake, Lake McDonough, Scoville Reservoir, Lake Zoar, Lake Lillinoah, East Twin Lake, Gardner Lake, Beseck Lake, Gardner Lake, Powers Lake and Moosup Pond. Mixed reports for Lake Wononscopomuc. Smallmouth bass fishing reported to be very good at Candlewood Lake. Other areas reporting good catches are Colebrook & Saugatuck Reservoirs, Mashapaug, Bashan, Coventry, Highland, Gardner and Bantam lakes.

Trout

Another variable week of conditions; rain late last week slowed the trout fishing in rivers for the early part but conditions improved as the flows moderated. Summer trout fishing is still variable in lakes and ponds, with good reports from East Twin and West Hill Reservoir the top producing lakes this past week. Good numbers of trout were found trolling baits in deep water anywhere from 25 to 40 feet using either lead core line or downriggers. Live bait and spoons presented behind large spinner blades and dodgers caught the most fish.

We review the effects of fishing on benthic fauna, habitat, diversity, community structure and trophic interactions in tropical, temperate and polar marine environments and consider whether it is possible to predict or manage fishing-induced changes in marine ecosystems. Such considerations are timely given the disillusionment with some fishery management strategies and that policy makers need a scientific basis for deciding whether they should respond to social, economic and political demands for instituting or preventing ecosystem-based management. Fishing has significant direct and indirect effects on habitat, and on the diversity, structure and productivity of benthic communities. These effects are most readily identified and last longest in those areas that experience infrequent natural disturbance. The initiation of fishing in an unfished system leads to dramatic changes in fish community structure. As fishing intensity increases the additional effects are more difficult to detect. Fishing has accelerated and magnified natural declines in the abundance of many forage fishes and this has lead to reduced reproductive success and abundance in birds and marine mammals. However, such donor-controlled dynamics are less apparent in food webs where fishes are the top predators since their feeding strategies are rather more plastic than those of most birds and mammals. Fishers tend to target species in sequence as a fishery develops and this leads to changes in the composition of the fished communities with time.

Regulators vote to overhaul West Coast groundfish fishing

FOSTER CITY, Calif. (AP) - Pacific Coast fishery managers have voted for new rules that would dramatically change the way fishermen harvest snapper, flounder, cod and other bottom-dwelling fish.
The Pacific Fishery Management Council voted Thursday to give preliminary approval to a plan that would give each boat a fixed share of the West Coast groundfish fishery. A final vote on the plan is scheduled for November.
The new rules would give each trawler an individual fishing quota, so fishermen would not need to rush out to harvest their piece of the $60 million fishery.
Backers say the system would make fishing safer and reduce the number of unwanted fish that are caught and thrown back to sea.
Individual fishing quotas are already used in British Columbia, Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico.

Lovina learns to fish

With all the nearby lakes here in Michigan, a lot of fishing is being done by people around here during this nice stretch of weather. We have enjoyed quite a few meals of fresh fish and have more in the freezer. I enjoyed my first time out fishing on the lake. My husband Joe took me one evening on his boat. At first, I was a little nervous, but I finally got the feel of the boat. It wasn’t long before we found a good place to fish. Joe helped me bait my hook after teaching me how to cast a line. We weren’t fishing very long when I caught my first fish. It was a bluegill.
Later I almost had a big bass but it got away before I could pull it into the boat. It was exciting enough, though, to make me want to go again. It was also very relaxing and peaceful out on the water.
Joe told me I did a good job of casting. I think he was a little afraid at first that the worm on my hook would land in his hair. We came home, and I helped clean fish for the first time. We then went over to Jacob and Emma’s house to meet up with our children. My sisters Verena and Susan had taken the children with them to Jacob’s house earlier. We all planned to "camp out" there for the night. **

Bait fishing bonanza at weir
The Macquarie River continues to yield Yellowbelly and Cod with winter well and truly knocking on the door. Anglers at the South Dubbo weir had a bait fishing bonanza with cricket score catches of Yellowbellys between 35cm to 40cm being reported. Lightly weighted shrimp caught and frozen during the warmer months were floated down the wash through the white water and took Yella’s consistently for bait fishermen, with one angler banking and releasing a 50cm brute.
The South Dubbo weir again had plenty of cameras out and working overtime, with the majority of the fish going back to fight again another day.
A few weeks back you might remember reading in Dubbo catches about a 17 pound Yellowbelly taken at Windemere Dam. We have tracked down the angler, who happens to be local fisherman Rod Tilling. This “fish of a lifetime” was taken on a yabby, fished off the edge of a weed bed. **

Fishing Captain Releases his 25,000th Billfish

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Think catching one marlin or sailfish is a big deal? How about being with someone who has caught and released 25,000? Sportfishing Capt. Ron Hamlin completed the feat in April 2008.

Hamlin, a veteran sportfishing captain, was recently named the top-tagging captain in the Pacific by the Billfish Foundation for an unprecedented 10^th year in a row. He works out of the Pacific Fins Resort in Guatemala on the charter boat Captain Hook and has been instrumental in training other captains at the resort who are nearly as prolific as Mr. Hamlin.

Hamlin credits the incredible Guatemalan fishery as one of the keys to his success. “Let me put it this way,” Hamlin explains. “It took me 35 years to catch 3,000. The last 22,000 I’ve caught during my 14 years in Guatemala.” Averaging as many as 2,500 billfish a year (2,809 in 2006), Hamlin says, “You can’t do this anywhere but Guatemala.” And Hamlin should know. He’s fished all over the world, including Florida, Venezuela and St. Thomas.

Hamlin was also instrumental in introducing circle hooks to billfishing as part of the catch and release movement. Circle hooks rarely end up killing billfish, so they can be released for future generations.

In fact, Hamlin was recognized by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association as one the Year 2000’s Seven Heroes of the Environment. Other recipients that year included Al Gore for global warming. He is one of fishing’s most honored conservationists, having been recognized by both the Billfish Foundation and IGFA.

Capt. Hamlin, now 64 years old, fishes almost every day out of the Pacific Fins Resort on Guatemalan’s Pacific Coast. He has fished with thousands of guests, many of who return year after year.

“The fishery is just so amazing down here, and it’s really easy for people to get here,” says Hamlin. “Many people think it’s going to be roughing it, but we have one of the very latest sportfishing fleets in the world, and certainly in Central America. It’s only a two-hour flight from Miami or Houston. Proverb tells, doesn't delay opportunity, because once opportunity comes will not be repeatable returned. As the saying is that is experience befalling me Saturday evening yesterday ( May 03, 2008).

One weeks before all, friends plans going fishing trip to area Indihiang, or near by area Cihaurbeuti at Sunday. Saturday evening before, I plan buys fishing rod bait in booth near by house, but because the evening downwards torrential rains, so that plan buys fishing rod bait nearing night, after rain alleviates.

When at that time came, sudden I get sms (short message) from neighbor, that at 18.30 there are invitation of other neighbor thanksgiving. I think by then can still buy fishing rod bait after at 19.00, as of return from the thanksgiving.

But, my estimate slip. When me and the neighbors came to man house which will perform [a] the thanksgiving, over there the event has not been started. New event started at 20.30 and having at 21.30. Thereby time had rather lateness, so that equipment shop of fishing rod have been closing.

Around at 22.00, I am with the neighbors go to Ciawi, around 45 minutes journey. At 24.00 has just returned to town Tasikmalaya. When returning to house, wife and child of I am medium look-on film Harry Potter, and I also follows look-on so at 01.30. Then sleeped.

The morrow I oversleep around at 07.00. So plan buys fishing rod bait when at dawn, returns to cancellation. Though event of going fish's starting at 07.00. Ice fishing safety: With new ice on area ponds and lakes, here are some safety tips:
** Constantly check the thickness of the ice and wear a life jacket, float coat or float suit.
** Let someone know you’re going to be on the frozen water. Take a cell phone in a sealed container.
** Go with a fishing buddy, but don’t walk or fish close together until you’re sure the ice is thick enough to support your combined weight.
** Don’t fish near streams or rivers, or around bridges. Currents keep ice from forming and can erode ice.
** Dress in layers. Anglers can quickly succumb to hypothermia, a cooling of the body core. Don’t drink alcohol, which lowers internal body temperatures.

More tournaments: The success of the night walleye fishing tournament late last year prompted Cleveland guide Virgil Tent of Fish Crazy Charters to expand his list of fishing derbies. Mussels out west: California and Colorado fisheries officials are very concerned after finding zebra mussels in San Justo Reservoir in California’s San Benito County and Colorado’s Lake Pueblo. If those fisheries managers would like to see the trouble they will soon face, visit Ohio. Lake Erie has trillions of the invasive species, and no real plans to halt ocean freighters from bringing more exotic creatures to the Great Lakes.

Ethanol backlash: The rush to plant corn and other bio fuel crops in order to cash in on the ethanol for auto fuel movement has had major repercussions in North Dakota, America’s duck factory. Federal figures show 420,000 acres of Conservation Reserve Program lands, a federal set-aside to benefit nesting waterfowl and other wildlife, were converted to cropland in 2007 as crop prices soared. That’s about 12 per cent of all CRP acreage in North Dakota. CRP losses were double what was expected.

"Conservation is in for a long swim against a strong current when trying to fight the tide of land rolling out of CRP," said Duck Unlimited’s Jim Ringelman, director of conservation programs. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service credits CRP with producing more than 2 million ducks a year.

IN a weekend of mixed fortunes, icy flood-water created havoc on the rivers making for low catches.

But on the other hand local lakes have fished brilliantly considering the cold snap.

The Frank Flynn Memorial Match fished on the lower Tees around Yarm attracted just 22 anglers because of the horrible conditions, but there were still fish to be caught.

Ian Lumb of Newman Scott made the most of his draw at peg 187 on the golf course section, after opting for feeder with worm.

A trio of bream obliged and his 11lb 9oz net was good enough to win.

Team-mate Bill Blythe fished identical tactics on the same stretch to connect with bream, but fell just short with 9lb 2oz.

T Walker of Yarm took third place in a difficult match with 3lb 12oz.

It was the same on the River Ure where 28 anglers battled the conditions for the Ripon Piscatorials match.

Graham Skirrey of Turners Tackle did the business by catching a pike and a couple of roach to win with 5lb 11oz.

In second place, Pontefract’s Brian Higgins fished stick float with maggot for dace and roach to weigh in 5lb.

On the River Ouse at Thorpe Underwood conditions were also horrendous for the Riverside Financial Services 52-peg match.

Winner Eddie Bridon of Shimano Quaker fished down the side with worm and caught all small roach in his winning 3lb 12oz net.

January 20, 2008 BEAUFORT, N.C. -- If you ask a Florida angler where to catch a big red drum, the answer almost certainly will be the Indian River, where 20- to 30-pound redfish are common. Gary Dubiel, who fishes the vast maze of waters around North Carolina’s Pamlico Sound, grins when he hears that and says, "We call the red drum in the Indian River ’bait.’

In August and September, we see lots of huge fish in the 35- to 65-pound range. It’s not uncommon to catch double-digit numbers in five hours." Beaufort offers an intriguing alternative for anglers who want to make a Southern saltwater fishing trip but don’t want to travel as far as Florida, or who have visited Florida several times and are seeking something new.

And while northerners tend to think of Southern fishing as a winter venue, the backcountry and near-shore waters along the North Carolina coast offer a cornucopia of species summer and winter -- speckled sea trout, drum, albacore, tarpon and giant bluefin tuna. Dubiel owns Spec Fever Guide Service and runs two boats to guide inshore for sea trout, redfish and flounder and offshore for albacore, Spanish and king mackerel, dolphin and tuna. The day I fished with him, we worked a small section of a single tributary to the Neuse River.

People need to see the scale of the water we fish to understand just how immense it is. What most people would call river or creek fishing is tiny compared to what we have," Dubiel said as he turned his boat into a tributary called the South River, a tidal cut that lets water flow between a bay and the Neuse. "You could spend days fishing the shorelines of this creek alone."

While these are saltwaters, the tidal range in western Pamlico Sound and its tributaries is tiny, only inches up or down, because narrow inlets and broad expanses of shallow flats control and dissipate moving water quickly. It makes it hard for people who come from other saltwater areas," he said. "They’re used to fishing with big, moving tides, and there aren’t any.

Freshwater fishermen tend to figure it out faster. What you learn here is that water levels are determined by the wind speed and direction," not tidal fluctuation. We have pretty close to a year-round fishery," said Dubiel, who mostly guides clients with spinning tackle but whose first love is fly-fishing. "In summer, we get a lot of pompano off the beach, along with Spanish mackerel and bluefish. We can also fish offshore for bluefin tuna, bonito and albacore.

We also see a fair amount of tarpon here from June through August, fish up to 150 pounds, and we see a lot of smaller king mackerel (under 20 pounds) in summer and the big kings in October and November. We have good fishing for trout, red drum and flounder just about all year.

February is usually the only month that’s slow, but if we have a warm winter like this one and the water gets to 50 degrees, you can have some good trout and redfish then." In April and May, anglers also catch smaller species off the beach -- whiting, spots, croakers, weakfish and dogfish are most common. May and June, we’ll maybe fish one day inside for trout, flounder and smaller drum, and the next day go offshore for dolphin or tuna," Dubiel said.

"In summer, July through early September, they might fish for trout and smaller drum in the morning, then go for big drum in he evening. We get our biggest red drum in summer. I’ll put 400 over 40 pounds in the boat in August and September. It’s scorching then, so what we generally do is go out with light tackle early in the morning and fish for smaller drum and flounder, then go out again in late afternoon and fish until dark for the big reds. It’s cooler then, and that’s their primary feeding time.

Later in the fall, the variety is really neat. People will fish for trout and flounder one day, and the next day go for the big adult drum, and the day after that go offshore for albacore and king mackerel. Some of our fish are real wanderers. Tags put on tarpon in the Neuse River have been returned from Cuba and Tampa Bay, and we got returns on tuna that were tagged offshore here from Greece in the Mediterranean" more than 3,000 miles away. For sea trout, flounder and smaller redfish, Dubiel said a good choice is a 7-foot spinning rod and reel with 6-10 pound line.

For tarpon and big drum, he uses beefier rods and reels that hold 250 yards of 20-30 pound line. For fly-fishing, we mostly use intermediate lines and 6-8 weight rods inshore," he said. "I find that a 7-weight fishes really well. When we get out toward the ocean, we use heavier rods for the pelagic fish."

The fishery that has been slow the past few years is the winter offshore and surf fishing for big striped bass. The stripers off the beaches migrate south in the winter from as far away as New England, following schools of bait.

They are cool-water fish that like temperatures in the 40s, but in recent winters the water has been in the 50s, and the striper schools have rarely come south of Chesapeake Bay 160 miles to the north. Yarmouth, MA - To advance dialogue between animal conservation groups and fishing associations seeking practical solutions to North Atlantic Right Whale entanglement and compliance toward approaching equipment mandates, the International Fund of Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org) and Atlantic Offshore Lobstermen’s Association (AOLA) have joined forces to host a cohesive "Lobster Gear Summit" January 11th, 2008 in Boston, Massachusetts.

"Saving the right whale requires collaboration and shared commitment. Already one of the most endangered animals in the world, lobster gear entanglement is currently the second leading cause of North Atlantic Right Whale deaths as gear, lines and other fishing equipment clutter the ocean and latch onto whales swimming in its path, wrapping around their mouths, flippers and tails while causing severe damage. To reduce the debilitating effects of entanglement on this species, regulations mandating use of ’whale-friendlier’ sinking groundline in lobster fishery were finalized by NMFS in October 2007 and scheduled to take effect October 7, 2008; an announcement heralded worldwide by conservation groups as an important first step in creating solid regulations to protect whales and other ocean species from human-related activities, as well as expanding collaboration between commercial, legislative and NGO agencies.

Building upon the past success of IFAW’s Lobster Gear Replacement Project, industry collaboration continues in this Lobster Gear Summit. This meeting affords an opportunity to reach common ground among participants by itemizing the equipment inventory needed, drafting a workable manufacturing timeline, and making the transition to reach compliance by the October 7, 2008 implementation date as smooth as possible.

Amateur, professional fishermen battle over yellow perch

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A fish so common anglers once called it "the people’s fish" has inspired years of fiery debate between recreational and professional fishermen, and now Maryland authorities are planning to step into the fray over yellow perch.

The state’s Fisheries Service plans a hearing Tuesday to listen to the dueling anglers over the yellow perch, a striped fish less than 1 foot long at full size.

Amateur fishermen complain that yellow perch are being hogged by professionals, who use large hoop nets to scoop up perch in the late winter and early spring as the fish head up Maryland’s tributaries to spawn.

The harvesting advocates counter that the yellow perch stock is healthy and that more limits on the fish will add another restriction to an already troubled industry.

"It has nothing to do with how healthy the stock is, but who gets it," says Larry Simns, head of the Maryland Watermen’s Association.

The debate goes back several years. Recreational fishermen have long pushed for limits on commercial fishing, while the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) tried to negotiate a middle ground.

The conflict grew heated last year, when the DNR’s Fisheries Service suggested lifting an 18-year moratorium on commercial fishing of yellow perch in two rivers on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the Choptank and the Nanticoke.

Hobbyists opposed the change, saying those rivers are among the few places left where recreational fishermen have a fair shot at getting yellow perch.

"Historically on the Eastern Shore, fishermen would be standing shoulder-to-shoulder catching yellow perch," says Robert Glenn, executive director of the Maryland chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, a fishing group that fought lifting the moratorium.

In areas where commercial fishermen are allowed to use their nets, Glenn says, "they don’t allow recreational fishermen a fair chance." Years ago, he says, yellow perch were much more plentiful.

"We used to call it the people’s fish," Glenn says. "A lot of people got started fishing with yellow perch, standing on the side of a tributary. You didn’t need a lot of expensive equipment."

Mike Benjamin, a charter boat captain out of North East, says he’s seen early-spring fishermen for yellow perch disappear.

"Used to be, it was a nice day, you’d take the kids out to a stream, the yellow perch were easy to catch. That doesn’t happen anymore," Benjamin says.

The commercial business is relatively small. Simns says fewer than 100 people catch yellow perch for sale. It isn’t very popular on Maryland menus, so much of the harvest heads to the Great Lakes region, where yellow perch is commonly served at fish fries or on fried-fish sandwiches.***

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.

BONITO LAKE: Trout fishing continued to be good in the evening hours this past week. Anglers did well using salmon eggs, elk hair caddis, prince nymphs and small spinners.

BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BRANTLEY LAKE STATE PARK: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. This would be a good lake for anglers to practice different casting and tackle techniques.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver and worms for catfish. Fishing was fair using small plastics for bass. We had no reports on other species.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms.

JAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN: Fishing was slow. A few catfish were taken by anglers using hot dogs, night crawlers and liver.

OASIS PARK LAKE: The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete around the end of summer. For more information contact the park office at (505) 356-5331.

PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 81 cfs. Fishing was fair using worms, shrimp and minnows for channel catfish and a few flathead catfish. We had no reports on other species.

RUIDOSO RIVER: As of Monday, water flow was 4.6 cfs. Trout fishing was slow but a few fish were taken by anglers using salmon eggs and small wet flies.

SANTA ROSA LAKE: The best reports we received were from anglers fishing for bass. They were fishing up the river channel and using drop shot rigs and spinner baits and fishing tight to the bank. We had no reports on other species. The water was quite murky.

SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

DENVER, CO--(Marketwire - September 17, 2007) - Fly Fishing Retailer Expo -When Amy Halm graduated from college, she had high hopes for a lucrative career in advertising. She never dreamed she would end up selling bait for a living.

But this bait won’t catch your dinner. ChickBait® is bait for chicks -- earrings and bracelets made from real fishing gear, according to Halm, whose official title is Chief Executive Chick. As she looks back on the first year of business, Halm is reminded of some advice she once got from her boss about success. He said, "Find a need and fill it."

So Halm went to work. She learned that fishing is the largest participant sport in America, with over 80 million Americans "goin’ fishin’" in 2005. And, nearly 28 million of those "fishermen" were actually women. Industry experts claim that women represent the fastest growing segment in the fishing market. Yet the industry seems to overlook that fact in its merchandising.

"We launched ChickBait at the 2006 Fly Fishing Retailer Expo in Denver," says Halm. "Our booth was busy all the time. People were fascinated by our products -- jewelry made from actual fishing gear. The sparkles, feathers and fur are just natural attention-getters," she said.

Halm got the idea for the business one morning on a 4:00 a.m. conference call in a previous job. "The demanding hours, travel and pressure made me want a simpler lifestyle. So I thought of opening a bait shop," Halm said. "But I knew from my advertising background, I would have to differentiate the product."

Now Halm thinks she’s differentiated bait "about as far as it can go." Just one year into the business, sales on the Internet site are steadily growing and outfitters from New York City to Arizona have signed up to carry the ChickBait line. ChickBait is packaged by handicapped people, who enjoy working with the colorful jewelry. And, with retail prices between $15 and $20, they make a great impulse buy, Halm said. "It’s not Tiffany’s," she admits. "It’s just for fun."

Halm has visions of the brand becoming a household name, and this week at the 2007 Fly Fishing Retailer Expo, the company is rolling out new ChickBait apparel, including items for babies and toddlers. "Everybody loves ChickBait. It’s just a fun word to have on the front of your shirt!" says Halm. Halm, who grew up fishing with her dad, says she doesn’t miss the glamour of the executive life on the road. "My customers are down-home people who love the outdoors," she said. "That’s enough for me now."

Action - Measure of rod performance that describes the elapsed time between flexion and return to straight configuration; ranges from slow to fast, with slow being the most amount of flexion; also refers to the strength of the rod (light, medium and heavy) with light being a limber rod and heavy a stout rod; also refers to gear of reels.

Active Fish - Bass that are feeding heavily and striking aggressively.

Adaptation - Biological adjustment that increases fitness.

Algae - Simple plant organisms.

Alkalinity - Measure of the amount of acid neutralizing bases.

Alley - An opening between patches of emergent weeds; also the parallel space separating emergent weeds and the shoreline.

Amp - Measure of electrical current.

Amp Hour - Storage capacity measurement of a deep-cycle batter obtained by multiplying the current flow in amps by the hours that it’s produced.

Angler - Person using pole or rod and reel to catch fish.

Anti-reverse - System that prevents reels from spinning in reverse.

Backlash - Tangle of line on a bait casting reel due to spool overrun.

Backwater - Shallow area off a river.

Bag Limit - Restriction on the number of fish that an angler may harvest in a day.

Bail - Metal, semicircular arm on an open-face spinning reel that engages the line after a cast.

Bait - An artificial lure is usually what is meant even though bait can also mean live bait.

Bait casting - Fishing with a revolving-spool reel and bait casting rod; reel mounted on topside of rod.

Baitfish - Small fish often eaten by predators.

Bar - Long ridge in a body of water.

Basic Needs - Refers to the three survival requirements of bass: reproduction, security, and food.

Bay - Major indentation in the shoreline of a lake or reservoir.

Bite - When a fish takes or touches (or hammers) a bait so that the fisherman feels it. Also known as a hit, bump, or a strike.

Black Bass - Common term used to describe several types of bass, including the largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass.

Blank - Fishing rod without grip, guides or finish.

Brackish - Water of intermediate salinity between seawater and freshwater.

Break - Distinct variation in otherwise constant stretches of cover, structure, or bottom type. Basically anything that "breaks up" the underwater terrain.

Break line - A line of abrupt change in depth, bottom type, or water clarity in the feature of otherwise uniform structure. A place where there is a sudden or drastic change in the depth of the water, or weed type. This may be the edge of a creek, a submerged cliff, or even a stand of submerged weeds.

Brush line - The inside or the outside edge of a stretch of brush.

Brush pile - Usually refers to a mass of small- to medium-sized tree limbs lying in the water. Brush piles may be only one or two feet across, or they may be extremely large and they may be visible or submerged. They can be created by Mother Nature or manmade. They usually hold fish. And fishermen.

Bumping - Refers to the act of making a lure hit an object such as a log, tree, or pier piling in a controlled manner. This is often done unintentionally, but can get the same reaction from the fish. Also, a lure making contact with the bottom.

Buzz bait - Topwater bait with large, propeller-type blades that churn the water during retrieve. Comprised of a leadhead, rigid hook, and wire that supports one or more blades.

Buzzing - Retrieving a lure, such as a spinner bait or buzzbait, at a rate fast enough to cause it to remain partially out of the water, causing a noisy disturbance. Sometimes called ripping or burning.

Cabbage - Any of several species of weeds, located above the surface or underwater, of the genus Potamogeton.

Carolina Rig - A style of terminal tackle normally used to keep a lure a foot or two (or more) off the bottom. This is most commonly used with a plastic worm, but is also used with floating crankbaits and other lures as well. A barrel slip sinker of 1/2- to 1-ounce is first slipped on the line and then a swivel is tied to the end of the line. A piece of line 18 to 30 inches long is then tied to the other end of the swivel and a hook or lure is tied to the end of this piece line. Rigged Texas style (weedless with the hook buried in the body of the bait), the combination is excellent for fishing ledges, points, sandbars, and humps. Diagram

Channel - The bed of a stream or river.

Chugger - Topwater plug with a dished-out (concave or "cupped") head designed to make a splash when pulled sharply.

Clarity - Refers to the depth you are able to see an object (such as your lure) under the water.

Cold Front - A weather condition accompanied by high, clear skies, and a sudden drop in temperature.

Contact Point - The deepest position on structure where a bass angler can first effectively present his lure to bass as they migrate from deep water.

Controlled Drift - The act of using an electric motor, drift sock, or oars to allow a drift to be accomplished at a certain speed and/or direction. This term is often called "drift fishing" by most anglers.

Coontail - Submerged aquatic plant of the hornwort family typically found in hard water; charactreized by stiff, forked leaves.

Cosmic Clock - The sun’s seasonal effect on water and weather conditions relating to barometric pressure, wind, and cloud cover.

Count It Down - Timing a sinking lure to determine when it will reach a specified depth. This is accomplished by finding the rate of sinking of a lure in feet-per-second. Often used when fishing for suspended fish.

Cove - An indentation along a shoreline.

Cover - Natural or manmade objects on the bottom of lakes, rivers, or impoundments, especially those that influence fish behavior. Anything a fish can use to conceal itself. Examples include stick-ups, tree lines, stumps, rocks, logs, pilings, docks, weeds, boathouses, duck blinds, bushes, etc. (not to be confused with structure).

Crankbait - Typically, a lipped lure that dives under the surface during the retrieve. So-called lipless crankbaits are thin, minnow-like lures that sink at a rate of about 1-foot per second.

Dabbling - Working a lure up and down in the same spot a dozen or more times in a bush or beside a tree.

Depthfinder - A sonar device, either a flasher unit or LCR recorder, used to read the bottom structure, determine depth, and in some cases actually spot the fish; also called a fishfinder.

Disgorger - Device for removing hooks deeply embedded in the throat of fish.

Drag - Device on fishing reels that allows line to pay out under pressure, even though the reel is engaged; set correctly, it ensures against line breakage.

Drop-Off - A sudden increase in depth, created by gulley washes, small creek channels, land points, and the general lay of the land.

Drop Shot - A hook tied directly to the line from four-inches to four-feet above the sinker. The hook is attached from the back side or opposite the point, with a simple Palomar knot with a tag end about four or five feet long. The weight hangs and the hook is at a 90-degree angle to the line with the hook point up. The hook can be 18 to 24 inches above a bell sinker tied on with a slip-knot.

Ecology - The branch of biology dealing with the relationship between organisms and their environment.

Edge - Refers to the borders created by a change in the structure or vegetation in a lake. Some examples of edges are tree lines, weed lines, and the edge of a drop-off.

Euthrophic - Highly fertile waters characterized by warm, shallow basins.

Fan Cast - Making a series of casts only a few degrees apart to cover a half circle (more or less).

Farm Pond - Small manmade body of water.

Feeder Creek - Tributary to a stream.

Feeding Times - Certain times of the day when fish are most active. These are associated with the position of the sun and moon and are referred to as solunar tables (also called moon charts) and are predictable for any time and place. See Moon Times.

Filamentous Algae - Type of algae characterized by long chains of attached cells that give it a stringy feel and appearance.

Feeding Cycle - Certain regular intervals during which bass satisfy their appetites. Examples: Major or Minor Solunar periods; sunrise, sunset.

Finesse Fishing - An angling technique characterized by the use of light tackle - line, rods, reel and artificial baits (often tube worms, grubs, or other small-sized soft-plastic lures); often productive in clear, fairly uncluttered water.

Flat - An area in a body of water with little if any change in depth. Small and large, flats are generally surrounded on at least one side by deeper water, the bottom comes up to form a flat area where fish will often move up for feeding.

Flipping - (generally shortened to flippin’) The technique of placing a lure in a given spot precisely, and quietly, with as little disturbance of the water as possible using an underhand cast while controlling the line with your hand.

Flipping Stick - Heavy action fishing rod, 7 to 8 feet long, designed for bass fishing.

Florida Rig - Very similar to the Texas Rig, the only difference is the weight is secured by "screwing" it into the bait.

Fly ’N Rind - Same thing as jig-and-pig - a combination of a leadhead jig and pork rind trailer.

Forage - Small baitfish, crayfish and other creatures that bass eat. May also be used in the sense of the bass looking for food (foraging).

Front - Weather system that causes changes in temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, wind and barometric pressure.

Gear Ratio - Measure of a reels’ retrieve speed; the number of times the spool revolves for each complete turn of the handle.

Grayline - Grayline lets you distinguish between strong and weak echoes. It "paints" gray on targets that are stronger than a preset value. This allows you to tell the difference between a hard and soft bottom. For example, a soft, muddy or weedy bottom returns a weaker symbol which is shown with a narrow or no gray line. A hard bottom returns a strong signal which causes a wide gray line.

Grub - A short plastic worm used with a weighted jig hook.

Habitat - The place in nature where a plant or animal species lives. The water, vegetation, and all that makes up the lake, which is where bass live. Habitat, for other creatures, is also in the woods and cities, it’s basically a term used to indicate a "living area" or home environment.

Hard Bottom - Area in a body of water with a solid base - clay, gravel, rock, sand. The type of bottom that you would not sink far, if at all, were you to walk on it.

Hawg - Usually refers to a lunker-size or heavyweight bass weighing 4 pounds or more.

Holding Area - Structure that habitually holds three to five catchable bass.

Holding Station - Place on lake where inactive fish spend most of their time.

Honey Hole - A super fishing spot containing a number of big bass; also any place with a large concentration of keeper bass.

Horizontal Movement - The distance a fish moves while remaining at the same depth.

Hump - An area higher than the surrounding area. A submerged dam or island might be considered a hump.

Ichthyology - The branch of zoology that deals with fishes - their classification, structure, habits, and live history.

Inactive Fish - Bass that are in a non-feeding mood. Examples of typically inactive times: following a cold front; during a major weather change that causes a sudden rise or fall in water temperature, or when a rising lake lever is abruptly lowered.

Inside Bend - The inside line of a grass bed or a creek channel.

Isolated Structure - A possible holding spot for bass; examples include a single bush on a point; a midlake hump, or a large tree that has fallen into the water.

Jig - A leadhead poured around a hook and featuring a skirt of rubber, plastic, or hair.

Jig-N-Pig - Combination of a leadhead jig and pork rind trailer; among the most effective baits for attracting trophy-size bass.

Keeper - A bass that conforms to a specific minimum length limit established by tournament organizations and/or state fisheries department.

Lake Modification Sources - Elements that change bodies of water, such as ice action, wave action, and erosion.

Lake Zones - Designation that includes four categories: shallow water, open water, deep water, and basin.

Laydown (or Falldown) - A tree that has fallen into the water.

Light Intensity - The amount of light that can be measured at certain depths of water; the greater the intensity, the farther down the light will project. This measurement can be significantly affected by wind conditions and water clarity. In waters where light intensity is low, brightly colored lures are smart choices.

Line Guides - Rod rings through which fishing line is passed.

Lipless Crankbaits - Artificial baits designed to resemble a swimming baitfish. Such plugs vibrate and/or wobble during retrieve; some have built-in rattles. Also called swimming baits.

Livewell - An aerated tank in boats used to hold fish in water until weigh-in time so that they have a better chance of survival when released. Similar to an aquarium.

Logjam - A group of horizontal logs pushed together by wind or water flow to form an obstruction. In lakes, logjams are usually found close to shore and in the backs of coves.

Loose-Action Plug - A lure with wide and slow movements from side to side.

Lunker - Normally, a bass weighing 4 pounds or more.

Micropterus Salmoides - Scientific term for largemouth bass.

Migration Route - The path followed by bass when moving from one area to another.

Milfoil - Surface-growing aquatic plants.

Mono - Short for monofilament fishing line.

Moon Times - Four phases of the moon are usually what the fisherman is concerned with. Generally the "best times" in a month occur three days prior and three days after, and include the day of the new or full moon. First quarter and second quarter periods are considered as only "good times."

Off Color - Refers to the color and or clarity of the water. Brown is muddy like from rain runoff, greenish from algae and black from tannic acid are the normal off-color conditions.

Our Hole - Proprietary term used by anglers to describe the area they intend to fish. (My hole, their hole, etc.) Though actually all holes are all angler’s holes since the lakes being fished are mostly public water. It’s only your hole if you get there first. Otherwise it’s their hole.

Outside Bend - The outside line of a creek channel or grass bed can be considered on outside bend.

Oxbow - A U-shaped bend in a river.

Pattern - A defined set of location and presentation factors that consistently produce fish. Example: If you catch more than one fish off a pier or stick-up, then your chances of catching more bass in such places are excellent. This is commonly called "establishing a pattern".

Pegging - Putting a toothpick in the hole of a slip sinker to prevent the sinker from sliding along the line. Other items such as rubber bands slipped through the sinker have also become popular and don’t snag line.

PFD - Initials that stand for Personal Floatation Device; also called a life vest.

pH - This is a measurement for liquids to determine whether they are acidic or alkaline. On a scale of one to ten, seven is considered neutral. Below seven the liquid is acidic and above seven it is alkaline. This is a factor that plays a role in the health of the lake and the fish as well as where the fish may be found in a lake.

pH Meter - Just as a thermometer measures heat and cold, a pH meter can be used to measure the acidity and alkalinity of water. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. Bass generally prefer water that is slightly alkaline in the 7.5 to 7.9 range. Water with a pH less than 7 is acidic. Once popular among serious bass fishermen, the device is no longer widely used.

Pick-Up - The act of a bass taking a slowly fished lure, such as a plastic worm, crawfish or lizard.

Pit - Area excavated for mining operations that fills with water.

Pitching - Presentation technique in which worms or jigs are dropped into cover at close range with an underhand pendulum motion, using a 6 ½ to 71/2 foot baitcasting rod. The act of pitching a bait into a pocket or under tree limbs. Similar to flipping, but requires less stealth and usually done from further distances (known as pitchin’).

Pocket - A small indentation of the shoreline.

Point - A finger of land jutting into the water; deeper water is usually found just beyond the exposed tip and along the length of both sides. Fishing on and around points is often exceptionally rewarding. They almost always hold fish.

Post Front - The period following a cold front; atmosphere clears and becomes bright; usually characterized by strong winds and a significant drop in temperature.

Presentation - A collective term referring to choice of type of lure, color, and size; structure targeted; amount of disturbance a bait makes when entering the water; and retrieval technique, speed, and depth used to catch fish. This refers to the circumstances and manner (speed and direction, etc.) in which a lure is presented to a fish.

Pro - A very few of the nation’s top bass fishermen can truly claim the word professional. Not only must the pro be a consistent money winner on the major tournament circuits, but he or she must also be articulate, a good salesperson, present a clean-cut image, and have the ability to teach others to catch fish.

Professional Overrun - A polite term for backlash.

Revolving-Spool Reel - Another term for baitcasting reel. The spool turns during casting, unlike the spool of a spinning or spincasting reel.

Reservoir - Artificially created place where water is collected and stored; also called an impoundment.

Riprap - A man-made stretch of rocks or material of a hard composition that usually extend above and below the shoreline; often found near dams of big impoundments.

Saddle - Site where structure narrows before widening again.

Sanctuary - Deep-water bass habitat.

Scatter Point - Position along structure where bass start to separate or scatter; often found in shallow water, at or very close to a breakline.

Short Strike - When a fish hits at a lure and misses it.

Slack Line - The loose line from the tip of the rod to the lure. This can be a slight bow in the line to an excess of line lying on the water.

Slicks - Bass not long enough to meet tournament standards; typically less than 14 inches. Such fish also are called "nubbins ", "through backs", "pop corns", "babies" and "dinks".

Slip Sinker - A lead weight with a hole through the center. Threaded on line, a slip sinker slides freely up and down.

Slough - A long, narrow stretch of water such as a small stream or feeder tributary off a lake or river.

Slow Roll - Spinnerbait presentation in which the lure is retrieved slowly through and over cover objects.

Slush Bait - Topwater plug with flat or pointed head.

Spincaster - A manner of fishing employing a push-button, closed-face spinning reel and baitcasting rod; reel is mounted on topside of rod.

Spinnerbait - A leadhead lure similar in shape to an open safety-pin with a hook; other features include a rubber, plastics, or hair skirt, and one or two blades of various shapes and sizes.

Spinning - A manner of fishing employing an open-face or closed-face spinning reel an spinning rod; reel is mounted on the underside of the rod; rod guides are on the underside of the rod.

Split Shotting - Often called stitch fishing because you move the bait in increments no larger than a sewing stitch and made just as slowly and patience is the key. Use a small #5 split-shot and crimp it about 18 inches above a light wire 1/0 or lighter small hook. Spinning tackle is a must. Small worms, 3-inch salt craws and others are perfect for the gentle application required.

Spook - The act of alarming a fish in a negative way. Examples: excessive noise, casting a human shadow.

Stick-Up - Stationary structure - stump, limb, section of pipe, fence post - that extends about 5 feet or less above the surface; a favorite casting target of bass fishermen.

Stragglers - Bass that remain near shore following a general migration.

Stringer - Antiquated term for a limit of fish, used by tournament anglers to indicate their catch (10-pound stringer = 10 pounds of fish. Not actually used any longer to retain bass, just a term people can’t seem to stop using. (see livewell).

Structure - Changes in the shape of the bottom of lakes, rivers, or impoundments, especially those that influence fish behavior. This is probably the most misunderstood word in bass fishing. Structure is a feature on the bottom of the lake. Some examples of structure are creeks, humps, depressions, sandbars, roadbeds, ledges, and drop-offs. Some examples that are not structure: a stump, tree, or brush pile (these are cover).

Suspended Fish - Bass at midlevel depths, neither near the surface nor on the bottom.

Swimming Lures - Sinking-type artificial baits designed to resemble a swimming baitfish. Such plugs vibrate and/or wobble during retrieve; some have built-in rattles. Also called lipless crankbaits.

Tail-Spinners - Compact, lead-bodied lures with one or two spinner blades attached to the tail, and a treble hook suspended from the body; designed to resemble a wounded shad; effective on schooling bass.

Taper - An area in a body of water that slopes toward deeper depths.

Terminal Tackle - Angling equipment, excluding artificial baits, attached to the end of a fishing line; examples include hooks, snaps, swivels, snap-swivels, sinkers, floats, and plastic beads.

Texas Rig - The method of securing a hook to a soft-plastic bait - worm, lizard, crawfish, so that the hook is weedless. A slip sinker is threaded onto the line and then a hook is tied to the end of the line. The hook is then inserted into the head of a worm for about one-quarter of an inch and brought through until only the eye is still embedded in the worm. The hook is then rotated and the point is embedded slightly into the worm without coming out the opposite side. Diagram

Thermocline - The layer of water where the temperature changes at least one-half a degree per foot of depth. Basically, a layer of water where rising warm and sinking cold water meet.

Tight-Action Plug - A lure with short, rapid side-to-side movement.

Tiptop - Line guide at top of fishing rod.

Topwaters - Floating hard baits that create some degree of surface disturbance during retrieve.

Trailer Hook - The extra hook, or cheater hook added to a single-hook lure, such as a spinnerbait or weedless spoon.

Transition - The imaginary line where one type of bottom material changes to another.

Treble Hook - Hook with single or bundled shaft and three points.

Triggering - Employment of any lure-retrieval technique or other fishing strategy that causes a bass to strike.

Trolling Motor - A small electric fishing motor, typically mounted on the bow, that is used as secondary boat propulsion, for boat positioning, and to maneuver quietly in fishing areas.

Turnover - The period when the cold water on the surface of a body of water descends and is replaced by warmer water from below.

Vertical Movement - Up and down movement of fish. Can also be movement of a lure such as a spoon (verticaljigging).

Weedless - A description of a lure designed to be fished in heavy cover with a minimum amount of snagging.

Weedline - Abrupt edge of a weedbed caused by a change in depth, bottom type, or other factor.

Wormin’ - The act of fishing with a plastic worm, lizard, crawfish, or similar bait.***

A strategy for maximizing machinery availability and cutting overhead

Why FISH?

FISH is based on a fact of nature - things most frequently wear out, malfunction or fail at an interface.

Think about it:

Tree limbs break off at the joint where they interface to the tree.

Sidewalks usually crack and crumble along the edges.

Doctors replace more knee and hip joints than bones because the body wears at the joint, an interface. Car suspension parts, machine gears and the like wear out at the point or surface of interface. Desks and chairs get worn or damaged where you interfaced with them. If you can find ways to protect the joint or interface from the root-cause stress, wear or damage can be eliminated or greatly reduced.

Fishing in the factory

These days, the design community is giving a lot of attention to design for Six Sigma, design for reliability, robust engineering and reliability engineering. Normally, the focus is on making individual components or modules (circuit boards, gears, crank-shafts, etc.) more reliable or robust. Failure mode effects analysis and highly accelerated life testing help discover ways to make the module more robust.

Designers spend much time and money calculating the reliability (failure rate) of individual modules as well as the reliability and failure rate of the entire system. Many times, they are greatly disappointed when the final system is built and fielded because real-world reliability just doesn’t stack up to their predictions. That’s the price one pays for ignoring this fact of nature. Designers plug all their nice modules together, into a system, and discover that, in the real world, equipment often fails because of physical or environmental interface stress.

In the plant, focusing on functional interfaces for opportunities to stress harden will bring returns in reduced amounts of malfunctions, scrap, equipment failures, unscheduled downtime and related production losses. Stress hardening equipment and components to protect them from root-cause stress can result in increased equipment uptime, accuracy, repeatability, yield, availability and productive profits, as well as reduced maintenance frustration and overhead.

How to FISH

Discover the root-cause stresses and find ways to harden against them. By way of example, consider a hot July afternoon spent trying to revive a CNC lathe that has been shut down after high scrap rate characterized by extremely rough rather than smooth ID cuts. It might take a couple of hours of unscheduled downtime before you identify, replace and re-tune a bad board. As soon as you open the axis drive panel, you realize what had caused the problem - it’s too hot in the cabinet.

So, you replace the board. The machine is fixed and the operator begins using it again, but with the cabinet door opened and a shop personnel fan blowing in it to keep the drives cooler, as operators often do in summer months. Now, you’ve got both a safety hazard and shorter machine life because of the dirt blowing into the electronics. But, hey, it works.

Rather than carrying on with this way of reviving machines, go Fishing. You pull an ”elecronic cabinet cooler” catalog from your shelf and find the right model to add to that CNC lathe axis drive cabinet. But, wait. Heat is only one stressor that causes equipment malfunction, scrap, and sometimes failure. Other circuit card root-cause stressors include: Heat, vibration, dirt, oxidation or corrosion, voltage transients and current surges. For hydraulic systems, the list includes: Heat, dirt, water, acids and varnish.***

Fishing for muskie in Minnesota

With fall coming many anglers are getting exiting about the muskie fishing. I just returned from Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota and the fishing there was great. Some of the guys that were on the water were fishing for muskies but the action was slow. The water temperature on Mille Lacs was still in the sixties putting it very close to peak muskie fishing time. Some muskies were caught, but no fifty inchers yet.

It’s been said that muskies will be very active when the water temperatures reach about fifty-nine degrees. I personally have seen the reality of that many times when fishing up north. So we’re not that far away from getting some good muskie action here in Illinois.

One of the places to go that is close by is Lake Storey just outside of town. This is a very well known lake for producing nice sized muskies. They have had good stockings of muskies in 2001, 2002, and 2003. These three stockings total up to about 800 fingerling fish and that means by now, they should all be of legal size being 42 inches.

Fishing on Lake Storey from a boat is by electric trolling motor only. Better spots to fish will probably be on the west end.

Big suckers below a bobber trailing behind a drifting boat will cover a lot of water. I’ve caught muskie that way and it’s a very successful presentation at this time of year. One muskie guide told me that by having a sucker rig that has a single spinner blade in the front of it will add some flash to the rig.

Sometimes that’s all you need to catch the eye of a muskie and once they get the sight and smell of one of their favorite meals, a live sucker, it’s fish on for sure.

You can also fish for bass, bluegill catfish and walleye while drifting with a sucker behind the boat. Make the most out of your trip. Do some multi-tasking. Working a shoreline for bass with a white spinnerbait may surprise you with a muskie jumping on the bait. Drifting with a big minnow on the bottom, using a Lindy Rig for example, can catch a walleye or two. But don’t be shocked if a muskie picks up the bait.

If you drift with a sucker behind the boat, you can also cast for them with inline spinnerbaits, glide baits, and jerk baits. I recommend that you don’t go with those huge 12 inch baits. Downsize a bit and it will increase your chances of getting a fish.

A lot of anglers don’t believe in using steel leaders because they feel that it takes away from the action of lures.

I don’t really know if it’s all that true. But what could be worse is when a big muskie get on and bites the lure off the line. Now he’s stuck with a big lure in its mouth and most likely that could be fatal for the fish. Use a leader. Muskie fishing is right around the corner. Dust off the ole‚ muskie rod and sharpen up the hooks. Great fall fishing is right around the corner and you’ll want to be ready. ***

Before we go fishing, let’s first check out the marina. In the well protected Puerto Vallarta marina, you will see in excess of 400 beautiful boats including multi-million dollar mega-yachts from throughout the world, million dollar fishing boats, and many sail boats from around the world.

Due to the popularity and explosive growth of Vallarta, this marina has been unable to meet the demand of the boat owners traveling to or retiring in Puerto Vallarta. This plan incorporates a 30 mile stretch of pristine shoreline on the Pacific Ocean and includes another world class 150 slip marina for yachts and sailboats, as well as three new golf courses, shopping districts, hotels and condo complexes, restaurants and boutique shops, and even a theme park modeled after Xcaret in the Cancun area. The infrastructure and the first Greg Norman golf course are currently under construction, therefore we can estimate that the marina will be ready within five years.

If you’re fortunate, you’ll be able to rent or purchase a slip for your million dollar yacht in one of the marinas mentioned above, housing over 1,200 million dollar plus yachts. As they say in Vallarta, if you’re really fortunate, it’s your best buddy that owns the million dollar yacht or fishing boat! Of course, if your boat is like most of ours, there are thousands of small slips available in the Vallarta area and many dry storage areas.

Okay, back to the fishing, now that we have a place to dock the boat! Although the large blue and black marlin run in the summer months, so do the gringos; they usually run to the north or to Europe because summer humidity and temperatures in Vallarta are similar to those in Houston.

Most of the serious fishing starts in November when the annual Sailfish Tournament is held. Fishing continues throughout the seven month “high season”, during which time the average daily temperature is 73*F with virtually no chance of rain. We have fished every year for the past decade and can tell you that fishing success varies significantly from year to year, depending on ocean water temperatures and currents. Four years ago, it was not uncommon to land ten to fifteen 100 pound sails a day. During one outing, we had three on simultaneously, all “walking across the top of the water“, heading in every direction imaginable--what a catastrophe that was! Most often during the “high season”, catching one to three sails per trip would be considered typical.

On the other hand, marlin are much more unpredictable during the “high season”. They’re out there but are few and far between. When you do hook-up, it’ll be anywhere from 600-1,000 pounds and will test your stamina.

Talking about testing your stamina, try landing a 300 to 400 pound yellow fin tuna! When the tuna are running, and they do every year during the winter months in the Pacific Ocean just outside of Banderas Bay, you’ll be able to test your fishing prowess as well as your physical condition! The smaller ones, in the 30 to 70 pound range are fun to catch and will provide you plenty of entertainment. When they range from 100 to 200 pounds, they head south as soon as hooked and the fight begins. Be prepared for a one hour struggle getting them to the boat, after which you’ll be needing a cold cerveza and an hour of rest! There will be a period of time almost every year when the big fellows show up. They are in the 300 to 400 pound range, approaching world record sizes. These monsters head out and deep as soon as hooked and hopefully, as your reel is spinning and your line is evaporating in front of your eyes, you’ll have time to get harnessed into your chair. You are getting ready for the three hour fight of your life when you’ve hooked a 400 pound yellow finned tuna. If you are a normal retiree, you’ll never get it in alone without having a cardiac arrest! We’ll usually have to rotate positions every half hour or so in order to land one of these monsters. Landing a 700 pound black marlin is a job, but landing a 350 to 400 pound tuna is life threatening!

Probably the most popular fish in the Vallarta area is the dorado. They are very edible and beautiful game fish ranging from 20 to 80 pounds. Dorado are plentiful, fun to catch, and considered by many to be the best eating fish in the sea.

There are numerous other game fish in and around Banderas Bay as well as great bottom fish such as huge red snapper.

If you’re not fortunate enough to own a million dollar fishing boat, there are many charter boats that cost from $300 to $500 per day. There are also hundreds of pangas that can be chartered for bay fishing at about $30 per hour. Banderas Bay is approximately 25 miles in diameter and one of the deepest bays in the world. Therefore, catching a 100 pound sail fish or a 50 pound dorado 300 yards offshore while fishing in a panga is not uncommon. Seldom will you ever get skunked when fishing in the beautiful Vallarta waters. Also, since almost every fish that you catch is desirable for eating, most of the restaurants in Vallarta will be pleased to prepare a wonderful dinner for your entire family using your “catch of the day” as the main course.

During the “high season”, weather conditions are always perfect for fishing. Winter storms are virtually nonexistent and the ocean water is generally quite calm. Perhaps once a month, the ocean might be choppy enough to prevent you from safely leaving the 25 mile bay, however the chance of catching a thriller 20 miles out, but still in the deep bay water, always exists.

As a secondary benefit to all fishermen, the scenery from offshore with the Sierra Madres as a backdrop, has to be among the finest on the planet; always take a camera when fishing in this area. The Mexican shoreline along this Riviera is as beautiful as Pebble Beach and it seems to run forever. National Hunting and Fishing Day-the 36th annual, Congress-appointed, president-proclaimed celebration of hunters, anglers and conservation-is set for Sept. 22.
Over 100 years ago, hunters and anglers were the earliest and most vocal supporters of conservation and scientific wildlife management. Led by fellow sportsman President Theodore Roosevelt, these early conservationists called for the first laws restricting the commercial slaughter of wildlife. They urged sustainable use of fish and game, created hunting and fishing licenses, and lobbied for taxes on sporting equipment to provide funds for state conservation agencies.
Populations of white-tailed deer, elk, antelope, wild turkey, wood ducks and many other species began to recover from decades of unregulated exploitation.

During the next half-century, in addition to the funds they contributed for conservation and their diligent watch over the returning health of America’s outdoors, sportsmen worked countless hours to protect and improve millions of acres of vital habitat-lands and waters for the use and enjoyment of everyone.
In June 1971, Sen. Thomas McIntyre (N.H.) introduced Joint Resolution 117 in the U.S. Senate authorizing National Hunting and Fishing Day on the fourth Saturday of every September. Rep. Bob Sikes (Fla.) introduced an identical measure in the House. In early 1972, Congress unanimously passed both bills. On May 2, 1972, President Nixon signed the first proclamation of National Hunting and Fishing Day.

National, regional, state and local organizations staged some 3,000 "open house" hunting- and fishing-related events everywhere from shooting ranges to suburban frog ponds, providing an estimated four million Americans with a chance to experience, understand and appreciate traditional outdoor sports.

Over the last year there has been considerable publicity about the benefits of Omega 3’s. Most of which is true and some of which is not.

There is no doubt that Omega 3’s can not only help your heart and joints but it will also help your brain. Most people are aware of this, but do the benefits of Omega 3’s apply across the board for all types of Omega 3’s? There are now many Companies in the world market today trying to capitalize on the Omega 3 ’boom’ with such a wide range of products and so many claims that it is hard for the consumer to sift out fact from fiction.

The purpose of today’s newsletter is to try and concisely as possible give you the facts about Omega 3.

I will try to explain the most important ones by dealing with each of them individually.

Important Point # 1

Your prime objective for consuming Omega 3 should be to get DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) into your body. The scientific evidence supporting the benefits of DHA is now overwhelming. It is much more important than EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) which is the major Omega 3 component of most fish oils.

Important Point # 2

Not all Omega 3’s will provide you with DHA and EPA. This is because these essential fatty acids are not present in a lot of Omega 3 products. For example, ground flax seed is an excellent oil for certain uses and contains Omega 3’s but does not actually contain any DHA or EPA at all. Instead it contains alpha linolenic acid which your body has to convert to DHA and EPA.

In many people, particularly the elderly this conversion process is very inefficient. To give you an idea, it is estimated that most adults would have to consume 10 - 40 grams of flaxseed oil to produce just 0.2 grams of DHA.

So, if you want to get the proven benefits of DHA don’t rely on getting your Omega 3’s from vegetable oils such as flaxseed. Note: There is however now some products being produced from algae which contain good levels of DHA and do not require the body to convert the ALA to the DHA. But, they are still not readily available and they are expensive.

Important Point # 3

The best source of DHA is from fish oil. However, there are some drawbacks with many fish oils:

1. The amount of DHA is low in most fish oils. A typical level is 12% DHA and 18% EPA. The popular ’salmon’ oils (which are not really salmon) are usually of the 12/18 type.

2. Many oils on the market today are from questionable sources and some have high levels of heavy metals or other
contaminants such as PCB’s. To ensure that you don’t ingest these contaminants, either use oils which have been molecularly distilled, or are from impeccable sources with a reliable certificate of analysis. This basically rules out any oil which is processed from fish caught in the Northern Hemisphere.

3. Most fish oils are of the triglyceride form which does not easily pass through the cell membranes. (More on this later)

Important Point # 4

Some suppliers of fish oil claim that it does not matter that the EPA is higher than the DPA because the body will convert part of the EPA to DPA. This is indeed true but like the conversion of ALA to DHA the percentage of conversion is very low. This is due in part to the high consumption of Omega 6 in the typical Western diet.

Enzymes needed for the conversion are in ’short supply’ in the bodies of those people who have a reasonably high level of Omega 6 intake (via vegetable oils). This is because the enzymes needed are ’used up’ in having to deal with the processing of Omega 6 oils.

As a result, the conversion in most people is quite negligible which further supports ingesting the DHA directly.

Important Point # 5

As I indicated earlier most fish oils are in the triglyceride forms. A triglyceride consists of 3 fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. It does not pass easily through the cell membrane as it is changed. It also requires two enzyme steps to ’release’ its fatty acids. Sometimes because of the structure of the triglycerides the fatty acids are not released but rather stay attached to the glycerol backbone.

In contrast, if the oil is esterified during the concentration and purification processes the resulting substance can easily enter the body’s cell membranes. The esterified molecule has no charge and only requires one enterase enzyme to release the fatty acid. (DHA). This enables the body to use it as an immediate energy source, or store it for later use.

In Summary:

To receive the many benefits of DHA you have to consider ensuring that you do as follows:

1. Find a source of fish oil that is high in DHA or alternatively be prepared to take much higher doses of conventional fish oil.

2. Ensure that the fish oil you use is molecularly distilled.

3. Try to find the oil in the Ester form for better bio-availability.

In conclusion, try to find a quality fish oil supplement that meets these three criteria and your benefits will far outweigh the cost.

Bass fishing tournament brings big bucks to town

The Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau has landed a big one. And this is no fish tale. Well, actually, it is.

Big-time fishing is happening on the Columbia River as you read this. The Wal-Mart FLW Series National Guard Western Division bass tournament has made our stretch of the river its first-ever stop in Washington.

And for those who think fishing is about as interesting as watching paint dry, this tournament may just change your mind.

This bass tournament on the Columbia brings with it $1 million in prize money. The top pro will take home $125,000 and the top "co-angler" (amateur) will receive a $25,000 prize.

While that’s all well and good for the fishermen, it means even bigger bucks for the Tri-Cities. Lots of fishermen with fancy boats and top-of-the-line equipment equals lots of disposable income that will be pumped back into our economy for the next few days.

The impact on hotels alone is estimated at $350,000.

Along with a place to sleep, people need to eat. And put fuel into their fancy boats and pickups. Then there’s always the chance that something might break or they forgot fishing line and they’ll need to call on the services of a local retailer.

We have top-of-the-line fishing boat manufacturers right here, and maybe someone will want to take a new craft back to Arizona or California.

But even without any boat sales, officials from the Visitor and Convention Bureau expect anglers and their support crews and families to spend an additional $95 per day per person in the community.

While a few of the participants are from our region, more than 400 will be visiting the Tri-Cities, many for the first time. We even have some international anglers from Japan and Canada. And who among them won’t be awed by the mighty Columbia?

This is not the first significant bass tournament to come to the Tri-Cities. Bassmaster has held its Western Invitational here in years past, but the prize money was much lower.

This is the big one.

The FLW series culminates with a grand prize of $1 million for the top angler at its annual fish-off. Even at this qualifying event in the Tri-Cities, 50th place earns $10,000 and 75th place still earns an angler $2,000.

Make you want to start fishing? Don’t get your waders in a bundle in your rush. These folks are serious, traveling from tournament to tournament to lake to river to swamp. This sport takes dedication, a love of the early morning and serious money.

While fishing tournaments on big rivers don’t necessarily provide for great spectator sports for shore-bound folks, it will be something to see in its edited version when the tournament is broadcast Nov. 18 on Fox Sports Net.

If you just can’t stay away from the action this week, be at the Columbia Point Marina at 3 p.m. daily through Friday for the weigh-in. Anglers are vying to have the heaviest total of fish by Friday’s weigh-in.

Fishermen estimate it will take 33 pounds of fish to make the cut. Then, the top 10 pros will continue fishing Saturday, competing for that $125,000 prize. It will take about 50 pounds of fish to earn that cash.

Another spectator-friendly event will take place before the final weigh-in Saturday at the Richland Wal-Mart. Free activities like a trout pond and boat simulator will be provided for the whole family from noon to 4 p.m., when the champion angler will be announced.

California to restrict fishing off Central Coast

California will ban or severely restrict fishing in more than 200 square miles of ocean waters off the Central Coast on Friday as part of a landmark plan to protect marine life.

The first set of 29 marine protected areas, which go into effect in state waters from Santa Barbara County to San Mateo County, will include 13 reserves where fishing will be prohibited and 15 conservation areas where some commercial and recreational fishing will be allowed. Another site in Morro Bay will permit some sport fishing.

"This starts off a program that will help sustain California’s marine resources into the future," said John Ugoretz, a state scientist who is overseeing the creation of the marine preserves. "We’re trying to make sure that we have healthy fisheries and sustainable resources."

Department of Fish and Game wardens will patrol coastal waters to enforce the new restrictions, and scientists will study the protected zones to understand their effects on fish and other marine life.

The state Fish and Game Commission voted to approve the first network of marine protected areas in April, following more than two years of often contentious negotiations with environmentalists, scientists, fishermen and coastal residents.

State regulators plan to create similar networks in four other regions off California’s 1,100-mile coastline. The next set will cover state waters, which extend three miles from shore, from San Mateo County to Mendocino County.

Scientists say California’s marine protected areas represent a new approach to saving the world’s oceans from overfishing and hope other states and countries follow suit.

A report in the journal Science last year warned that nearly a third of the world’s seafood species have collapsed and all populations of fished species could collapse by 2048 if current fishing and pollution patterns persist.

While traditional fishery management focuses on preserving individual species, California regulators are now seeking to protect entire ecosystems that are rich in marine life, from rockfish and abalone to migrating salmon and whales.

But many fishermen complain that the marine protected areas will restrict fishing in the most productive areas, and could lead to overfishing in unprotected regions. They worry the new rules will hurt the state’s commercial and sport fishing industries.

"We think the restrictions are way too severe," said Vern Goehring of the California Fisheries Coalition. "It restricts and prohibits fishing in an inordinately large portion of the best fishing areas."

Ugoretz and other scientists say the marine protected areas will serve as nurseries for fish and invertebrate species and eventually lead to healthier fisheries.

RACINE, Wis. -- The weather started getting rough. And the tiny ship was tossed.

If not for the spirit of Captain Dale Coleman, we wouldn’t have caught three chinook salmon and one coho salmon on a splendid charter fishing trip off the Racine coast.

I put on a floppy Gilligan hat, my best friend played the role of Ginger and we jumped aboard Coleman’s 30-foot Happi Hooker boat at 7 a.m. on recent weekday. With crew member Sam Slaasted, we set sail two miles out into Lake Michigan. There were three-foot swells.

Not so swell for us, but we endured.

Because of the unique ridges along the lake floor where fish feed near Racine’s shoreline, the area is one of the most popular fishing spots on the Great Lakes. Coleman told us we’d find coho salmon and brown trout but that the waves were just too high to venture out farther for lake trout.

Charters here average the largest number of fish caught annually on Lake Michigan. The hook with charters is that they are one-stop shopping. Short-term fishing licenses are sold at the dock, the captain and crew offer advice and they clean, bag and ice the catch on land.

Ginger didn’t feel so good on the choppy waters. I didn’t feel so good watching Slaasted gut and gill our fish. The majority of toxins are in the fish’s belly fat, which the crew also cuts out.

According to the 2006 Lake Michigan LaMP (Lakewide Managment Plan) report, polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, are the main contaminants in chinook and coho salmon. PCBs adhere to fat, so stripping the skin and fat, as well as broiling the meat, removes up to 90 percent of the contamination, the report says.

Charter fishing season runs until early October and resumes in late April. Daily charters are available through Fishing Charters of Racine, www.fishracine.com, (800) 475-6113. Trips can be booked for five, eight and 10 hours. Prices average $300 for four people on a five-hour trip; add about $80 an hour for extra hours. Tips are not included.

We iced the fish we caught. Fresh fish can last about three days when stored below 42 degrees. A few days later, at a campground in La Farge, Wis., we grilled one fish using Ginger’s "Lo-Tech Campfire" recipe. She sprinkled salt on both sides of the salmon. She spread half of a bunch of fennel fronds on a big piece of foil, then placed the fish on top, along with the rest of the fronds and sliced onions.

I held the flashlight.

Ginger then sealed up the fish and added another layer of foil, cutting a vent for steam to escape. The fish cooked skin side down on the campfire grill for 15 minutes. It continued to cook after being taken off the grill.

If you don’t want to camp or store the fish for the trip home, the Ivanhoe Pub and Eatery, 231 Main in downtown Racine, (262) 637-4730, will cook your fish. The pub also serves 36 martinis. On the evening before our fishing trip, we ate at the Corner House Supper Club, 1521 Washington, (262) 637-1295, on the recommendation of Chicago chef Michael Altenberg, a former Racine resident. We enjoyed Orange Roughy Almondine ($16.95) and lake perch ($14.95) with a couple of frosty Leinenkugel’s ($4 each).

We caught our fish with hardware consisting of metal spoons, flies and J plugs (plugs that dive into the water as the boat trolls). Slaasted, 15, and his father also make their own flies.

Coleman has been on Lake Michigan for 36 years.

"I saw a 37-pound chinook and a 37 pound lake trout," he said while watching us weave back and forth like knocked-out bowling pins. "That was 20 years ago when the big fish were here. They’re getting smaller."

The lake around Racine is clearer than years past. Zebra mussels are eating algae, which Coleman theorizes removes a food source for the lake’s bait fish.

Slassted cast six lines. Ginger and I just waited until the fish took a bite. If it wasn’t 8 in the morning, we would have been drinking beer. Once there was action on the line, we took over. We learned to keep the fishing rod tip straight up and our knees straight. It certainly was reel life.

Amateur, professional fishermen battle over yellow perch

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A fish so common anglers once called it "the people’s fish" has inspired years of fiery debate between recreational and professional fishermen, and now Maryland authorities are planning to step into the fray over yellow perch. The state’s Fisheries Service plans a hearing Tuesday to listen to the dueling anglers over the yellow perch, a striped fish less than 1 foot long at full size.

Amateur fishermen complain that yellow perch are being hogged by professionals, who use large hoop nets to scoop up perch in the late winter and early spring as the fish head up Maryland’s tributaries to spawn.

The harvesting advocates counter that the yellow perch stock is healthy and that more limits on the fish will add another restriction to an already troubled industry.

"It has nothing to do with how healthy the stock is, but who gets it," says Larry Simns, head of the Maryland Watermen’s Association.

The debate goes back several years. Recreational fishermen have long pushed for limits on commercial fishing, while the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) tried to negotiate a middle ground.

The conflict grew heated last year, when the DNR’s Fisheries Service suggested lifting an 18-year moratorium on commercial fishing of yellow perch in two rivers on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the Choptank and the Nanticoke.

Hobbyists opposed the change, saying those rivers are among the few places left where recreational fishermen have a fair shot at getting yellow perch.

"Historically on the Eastern Shore, fishermen would be standing shoulder-to-shoulder catching yellow perch," says Robert Glenn, executive director of the Maryland chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, a fishing group that fought lifting the moratorium.

In areas where commercial fishermen are allowed to use their nets, Glenn says, "they don’t allow recreational fishermen a fair chance." Years ago, he says, yellow perch were much more plentiful.

"We used to call it the people’s fish," Glenn says. "A lot of people got started fishing with yellow perch, standing on the side of a tributary. You didn’t need a lot of expensive equipment." Mike Benjamin, a charter boat captain out of North East, says he’s seen early-spring fishermen for yellow perch disappear. "Used to be, it was a nice day, you’d take the kids out to a stream, the yellow perch were easy to catch. That doesn’t happen anymore," Benjamin says.

The commercial business is relatively small. Simns says fewer than 100 people catch yellow perch for sale. It isn’t very popular on Maryland menus, so much of the harvest heads to the Great Lakes region, where yellow perch is commonly served at fish fries or on fried-fish sandwiches.

The 7:45 p.m. kickoff time set for Saturday’s Georgia-Alabama game for the ESPN broadcast has the longtime Bulldogs radio voice scrambling for a Plan B for what will be just the second game that he won’t be behind the microphone in his 42 years at Georgia.

"The fishing is probably going to have to go away and I’m not so much sure now exactly what I’m going to do," said Munson, who turns 85 later this month. "Because of the night time angle, I think the fishing angle has been shot right out of the saddle."

Because of Munson’s declining health, Scott Howard will take over the play-by-play for Munson and former Georgia quarterback Eric Zeier be the color commentator for four road games. Munson has been asked to call in to the radio broadcast but his plans beyond that are sketchy.

"I’ll be in the state of Georgia," Munson said Wednesday.

"Now I have no idea what I’m going to do. I have no idea how I’m going to handle Saturday. I really don’t."

A report about fishing in Canada

Fishing activities around our coastline have definitely stepped up as the weather improved and the sea turned an excellent colour for Kob, plus the South Westerly wind is also warming the water up. Regular shore anglers have caught a number of "bosklas" Kob and a few slightly larger fish, although most of the Kob are just size and the smaller Kob are plentiful.

Anglers fishing from small boats for Kob have also been quite active in Die Poort, Gaatjie and Melk Bay areas.

If the good weather conditions continue, Kob and bank fishing should be productive this weekend.

I have included a complete report in this week’s column which I received from Professor Hennie Heyns about his fishing trip and holiday in Canada, which I believe readers will find both interesting and informative.

Professor Heyns is an avid fisherman and regular reader of this column and he thought readers would enjoy reading about his experiences in Canada.

He recently returned from his annual fishing trip and visit to his daughter in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada and also visited the Queen Charlotte Islands south of Alaska as well as Alaska itself, where he did quite a bit of fishing.

According to Professor Heyns, what was almost as exciting as the time spent fishing was the seemingly endless options one has when it comes to choosing one’s British Columbia fishing destination.

Thousands of lakes

With thousands of kilometres of coastline and more than 25 000 lakes and literally thousands of kilometres of rivers and streams as well as the ocean, the angler is really spoilt for choice as far as fishing spots are concerned.

No matter where one goes in the province, one is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty that makes British Columbia (BC) a world-class vacation destination.

It is easy to understand why sport fishing, which offers unparalleled experiences to anglers from far and wide, is a way of life there.

For freshwater anglers, BC offers a wide variety of fish throughout the province, from right in town to the furthest and most remote areas.

For salt water anglers the waters of BC and specifically those of Prince Rupert, Queen Charlotte Islands and Alaska is a place where eagles, bears, whales and fish outnumber people and where fishing is both a job and a recreation.

Professor Heyns said imagine yourself aboard a fully equipped charter boat on the Pacific Ocean, especially in one of these areas, feeling the salt spray and sea wind as you wait for the first strike on your line. The crabbing season was however, once again excellent and crabs were abundant, so much so that Professor Heyns was able to eat crabs every day and apart from the crabs he caught himself, he was also supplied by other recreational anglers, friends and professional fishermen who were patients of his son-in-law - who is a medical doctor in the area.***

A Place of Many Fish: Alaska’s Aniak River

The first thing you notice about Alaska is how much there is of it. More than one-third the size of the United States, its landscape varies from temperate rain forest to glacial fiords, to snow-capped mountains, to tundra, with some places having all those terrains.

Wildlife is everywhere, and the streams, rivers and lakes teem with fishes of all description, including the wonderful Pacific salmon: the king (Chinook), silver (Coho), sockeye (red), chum (dog) and pink (humpback). It is an angler’s nirvana, and I, once again, was about to cast in paradise for a week.

The view from the Pen Air twin-engine aircraft is stunning, particularly on a clear day. After leaving Anchorage, you cross over the impressive Alaska Range, and Mount Denali (McKinley) cuts a striking figure to the north. Denali, the “High One” in the native language, is one of the most beautiful and haunting mountains on earth.

Some of the finest wilderness-fishing for all five species of Pacific salmon, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic grayling, shee fish (inconnu) and Northern pike is found in the fertile and gorgeous Aniak River, which was my destination, an hour-plus flight from Anchorage to the West. There are no roads or rails into the region, and much of the area lies in or near the huge Yukon National Wildlife Refuge.

The Aniak River Lodge is a fine log-structure sitting high on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River. It has all the amenities, including warm beds, modern plumbing and fine food. But the 10 to 12 guests a week only stay here for two nights, sometimes three. The remaining time is spent about 40 miles up the Aniak River, a tributary of the Kuskokwim, in a comfortable riverside Spike Camp, right smack in the middle of some of the best angling that Alaska has to offer.

It takes all day to travel in the jet boats to the camp because guests fish along the way; first for Northern pike in the tributary sloughs and sheefish in the lower, slower-moving waters of the Aniak.

While salmon filets roasted in aluminum-foil pouches, and beans or corn bubbled in their cans, several of the guests broke out five or six weight-rods with floating lines or medium-light spinning gear for Dollies, grayling and rainbows over 20 inches.

However you catch your fish, Alaska is the place to do it, and the Aniak River is as wild and beguiling a place you’ll ever see. There might be a few rubber drift boats sliding by, but otherwise there won’t be another soul. Having the modern jet boats -- two anglers fish with one guide -- opens up miles of water up and down stream. Anglers can follow fish upriver and into tributaries, something that can’t be done in a drift boat or raft.

After arriving at camp, the gear is unloaded in a large, comfortable two-person tent with a wooden floor, cots with sleeping bags with liners and mosquito netting. Then there is a great meal in the mess tent, followed by a superb night’s sleep.

Wake up, visit the canvas port-a-potty-type latrine, get into waders, have a cup of coffee in front of the fire while the chef does breakfast, and enjoy the changing of the light as the sun rises higher in the sky. Then go down to the boats, pick up the rods in the rack by the river along the way, fish until you’ve had enough (and you will), and repeat the process on your return in the late afternoon.

Life is good on the Aniak River. Fish are all around the camp, either spawning in the redds or passing through, and with the longer days of an Alaskan summer, an angler could fish most of the night as well.

And always keep an eye out for bears, wolves, moose, eagles, minks, river otters, beavers and other critters that make the Alaska experience even more special.

The Aniak River Lodge is open from June into September. It is a well-run operation, and the guides are some of the best I’ve ever worked with. You may use conventional equipment and fly-fishing gear, and catch-and-release is encouraged, although arrangements can be made to keep some of your catch for shipment home -- these salmon are not endangered.

Fishing lures in general do not require much care when storing them in a home or shop. Fishing lures that have feathers or hair should be kept in airtight containers so that moths and other insects or small animals will not get to them. In general, when examining any fishing lure you have made or bought it’s a wise policy to repair it if you are the least bit doubtful about its condition. Repairing usually means sandpapering the part of the lure body that is slightly chipped and then touching up with a small brush, using enamels or lacquers.

Replace the hooks with new ones if they are badly rusted. When doing this it is important to use the same size and weight as the old ones so that the action of the fishing lure is not changed in any way. If the damage is too bad and the lure cannot be repaired, throw it away after salvaging any usable parts.

It doesn’t pay to take chances with a fishing lure that is weak in any way. You may hook a record fish but lose it if the lure is not dependable. Many anglers who buy their fishing lures in tackle stores often use them until they fall apart, before buying new ones. But if you make your own fishing lures you can afford to use only those that are still in good condition.

It is better to be safe than sorry.

Once you have decided exactly what kinds of fish you want to catch and how you want to catch them, you need to discuss the accommodations.

In order to get the kind of fishing your group wants, are you willing to rough it in a tent camp where you have to prepare your own food, or is a certain amount of creature comfort also a priority?

How important is a hot shower at the end of the day, or having someone else deal with the cooking and cleaning up? Can you live without a flush toilet? Would you rather bring your own boat?

Again, it�s important to be honest and realistic right up front.

Key Largo Flats & Backcountry Fishing Report 1-23-06

Welcome back to "What’s Bitin". Here’s this weeks fishing report. The weather forecast for this week was supposed to be nice for fishing but Mother Nature sure didn’t hear it. In between the winds and the low tides we fished hard for Reds and Snook.
We caught a lot of Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish but we did get our Redfish and Snook. On the last day of the week I had two Anglers, Chris & Andy who are my good friends. (that’s them in this weeks photos).

We fished on Andy’s boat in the Backcountry.
The winds wouldn’t let up so we couldn’t do any poling on the flats. We hit the deep holes instead. My buddy Chris hooked the first Redfish and lost him at the same time Andy hooked a Red and on the boat he came. I hooked a nice Snook but he broke my line (Thanks to Andy’s rigging).

I was using his rod & reel. (just kidding Andy).
A little while later my little buddy Chris hooks a Redfish and saves the day. Sometimes it pays to fish the Flamingo and Capt Sable area where you can hide from the winds. Coming up this week we’ll be doing more fishing for Big Redfish, Snook and Trout. Last weekend, on a beautiful Saturday morning, I went fishing with a friend on the Pecos River here in New Mexico. We had been fishing for a couple of hours when my friend decided he would carefully approach the subject of getting more opt-in subscribers for his newsletter. He knew I had over 400,000 opt-in subscribers for T-Shirt King�s newsletter and he wanted to know how I did it. He was afraid that it was a trade secret and I would brush him off and continue to fish. That was my reaction initially.

You see, I get this type of question all the time. When it comes at a time when I�m fishing, a simple answer like that is the easiest, and it keeps us fishing instead of talking. However, this morning I was a softy and, after some prodding, I gave in.

To begin with, let me quickly explain that there are two sales tools that all online retailers should use regardless of what you sell. You should have a newsletter and an affiliate program. We put our poles down and sat on the edge of the river to discuss how my friend could build an opt-in list of over 100,000 this year. He had a lot bigger expectations for his opt-in list than he did for this fishing trip. He never did get back to fishing.

His first question was about getting people on his site to opt-in. He had an opt-in subscription box on his site already and it was prominently placed. But, with over 5,000 daily visitors, he was only getting about twenty subscribers. It was a real disappointment.

Plus, anyone that really hates pop-ups already has pop-up blocker software. But the proof is in the results. When I added our contest and a pop-up, we did better than quadrupling our subscriber rate. For my fishing buddy, it would take him from 20 opt-in�s a day to over 80.

The investment for a contest can be minimal when compared to the cost of gaining subscribers any other way. You know that you can find companies that will sell you subscribers for fifteen cents a piece or more � right? At $.15 per subscriber, that�s $15,000 for 100,000 subscribers of questionable quality. Using these methods can cost you less than a hundred bucks for 100,000 high quality, targeted subscribers!

Jig Weights

Jigs are one of the most versatile game-fish catchers in either fresh or saltwater. It is so important to have the right weight jig for your line weight. If the jig is too heavy for the line, you will loose your jig far too easily. If the jig is too light for the line, its swimming pattern will be disrupted and it won�t be ass effective. This simple chart will help you select the correct jig:

Treble Hook Replacement

When replacing the treble hooks on your lures, there are a few things to consider. Chang the split ring too because it is subject to stress and rust. Use a stainless-steel split ring for strength. They do not spread or rust as to most of those that come wit h the plugs. Don�t, however, use stainless steel hooks � they are more easily bent out of shape by a fighting fish. Also, if a fish gets away with your plug, stainless steel will not rust out, as a plain steel hook will. Lastly, get some split-ring pliers � they make changing your hooks easy.

Extra Springs

If you use a spinning reel, you have probably had a spring break when the fishing gets really hot. Always carry extras (use a 35mm-film canister) � and make sure to have a little screwdriver along as well. Practice changing it before you go out

No-slip Soles

If your winter boot soles are worn, just cut the liner to match the sole of an old sneaker. Fasten the felt to the sneaker sole with a non-soluble glue. Please a heavy object on top of the sneaker overnight, and by morning you have an all purpose non-slip shoe.

Snag-proof Spinners

Treble hooks are oftentimes �trouble� when using spinners, causing snags. Make them snag-free by removing the treble hook and replace with a single hook. Next thread on a three to four inch twister-tail grub and Texas-rig it.

Downriggers

Need to drop your bait down deep? Fish are very uncooperative creatures, and don�t always hang out near the surface. If your depth sounder is alerting you to fish down deeper, a downrigger can really help out.

If you aren�t exactly sure what it is, it is simple. It is a spool holding between 200-600 feet of steel cable. There is a weight attached that is between 6-12 pounds. Additionally there is a quick-release line gripper, just like a clothespin.

The fishing lines from your rods are attached to the quick-release mechanisms. Then the entire thing is dropped down to the depth you want. The bait is far enough from the weight and line gripper not to spook the fish. If you get a bite, the line is released from the gripper, so it is just you and the fish!

Some downriggers have fish-attractant properties (either electrical, or a special kind of paint), but not most of them.

Downriggers work great for deep trolling, and some even have an electronic crank that will bring everything up. If you need to get at deeper schools of fish, these are highly recommended.

Nail Polish Helps

Does your spoon, spinner, or plug get the paint chipped after only a few casts? Use clear fingernail polish to protect the paint and increase durability. Carry a bottle with you when you are fishing, and give it a shot.

Ferrules

If there is dirt on your ferrule it can contribute to rapid wear. Make a plug out of wood to help keep the female ferrule clean.

Is your ferrule stuck? Use �Liquid Wrench�, which you can get at any auto-parts store. Just spray it around the male ferrule and let it drip down. In a few minutes you will be able to pull it apart.

Getting Out Line Tangles

Use a pair of large fabric needles to work out these tangles. They have a smooth finish which won�t damage the line as you work the mess out. They are also handy to sew canvas tarp, leather, or carpet strips.

Pocket Tackle box

Attach a cord to your pocket tackle box, so you don�t worry about dropping it in the water or leaving it behind. Just drill an undersized hole near the back of the box and insert a small eye-screw. A know will stop the cord from slipping through the eye. Just put a clip on the other end so that you can secure the rope to a belt loop or buttonhole.

Avoiding Line Twist

Line twist is the leading cause of fouled fishing. To check for it, pull off enough line to span your outstretched hands � about 6 feet. Next, bring your hands together in front of you, causing the line to drop into a loop. If the loop wraps around itself, you have line twist. Remove it by trolling about 100 feet of line behind a boat. Next install a ball-bearing swivel to prevent future line twist.

Knots Are Key

One of the most important things in losing or landing a hooked fish is your knot. Be certain the knot you are tying is strong and properly tied.

To make sure, tie your usual knot and test it against other knots. A good test is to take two four-inch sections of a broom handle with the screw eye in the center of each. Tie a knot in each screw eye and pull steadily until you see which knot survives. Do it 10 times to get an average. The knot that holds best should be your new knot.

Anchor Pulley, Keep it Quiet

If you use an anchor pulley, you risk spooking the fish as most pulleys eventually start to squeak. Try this alternative to a pulley:

Get a large U-bolt, a few nuts and washers, and an old-style glass or porcelain fencepost insulator.

Slip the insulator on a U-bolt, drill a couple of holes to accommodate the bolt, and tighten it to the mounting surface. The anchor rope will slide freely in the insulator�s groove, and the anchor lowers and raises as effortlessly as with a pulley, especially once the rope is wet.

Casting Poppers

Casting poppers with a fly rod is awkward. To get better distance bore a slightly undersized small hole in the popper, just big enough to fit a BB in. It should fit snugly and will give you another 30 feet of casting distance at least.

Cheap and easy depth finder

Using two felt-tipped markers (red and black) mark an anchor rope as follows: A single red mark around the rope at five feet, a red and black mark at 10 feet, a single red mark at 15 feet, two black marks at 20 feet, a single red and two black marks at 25 feet and three black marks at 30. Use the color code red for every five feet and multiples of black for 10 feet.

Netting baitfish

Increases the efficiency of your minnow scoop by putting a bend in it. Just turn the wire handle down 90 degrees, then push the net back on line. The forward-positioned net makes it much easier to trap a baitfish against the inside of an open-top bucket.

A Cheap Anchor For A Fishing Boat

For holding a good-sized boat over a rocky bottom, use a large swivel snap to fasten four fee of heavy chain to a standard mushroom anchor. You can get one from a junkyard. The chain boosts the anchor�s weight and holding power, provides convenient handles for lowering and raising, and gives extra leverage when an anchor jams in rocks or snags. When he brings it aboard, he coils the heavy chain on a bed of old foam-rubber pads so it doesn�t rattle around or dent his boat. In calm water, he simply unsnaps the chain and uses the mushroom anchor by itself.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Here is the Lake Erie fishing report provided by the Division of Wildlife of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources:

Unstable fall weather continues to limit fishing opportunities. Wind, waves and stained water are making walleye fishing difficult. When the winds calm and conditions stabilize expect fishing to improve.

Heading into the late fall season the Bass Islands, Kelleys Island and nearshore from Port Clinton to Vermilion will all produce walleye. Stable conditions and clear water produce the best results. The best technique to catch fall trophies is trolling crank baits around open water baitfish during the day or along rocky shorelines at night. Shore anglers can also catch walleye from western basin piers after dark as walleye move inshore to feed on shiners and gizzard shad.

The Lake Erie surface temperature is 49 degrees off of Toledo and 55 degrees off of Cleveland.

The yellow perch daily bag limit on Lake Erie has been reduced to 30 fish per day. The change in yellow perch bag limit occurred after the printing of fishing regulations brochure. The 2007-08 fishing regulations brochure incorrectly lists the Lake Erie yellow perch bag limit as 40 fish per day, which has now been changed to 30.

The black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) daily bag limit is 5 fish with a 14-inch minimum size limit.

The walleye daily bag limit is 6 fish. The minimum size limit for walleye is 15 inches.

The steelhead trout daily bag limit is 2 from Sept. 1 until May 15. The minimum size limit for steelhead is 12 inches.

At Patriot Place, Bass is big lure

Hard-hat workers swarmed the two-level, 150,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops store in Foxborough last week, putting the finishing touches on the chain’s first outlet in New England, part of the much-heralded Patriot Place center.

In a man-made indoor pond, several live turtles were getting used to their accommodations. Nearby, taxidermist-stuffed animals - coyote, fox, turkey, and bobcat - awaited dispersal to other parts of the venue, which includes an arcade where visitors fire toy guns at stuffed animals that respond by waving their tails or standing on hind legs.

Retail specialists predict that when the outdoor and sporting goods megastore opens Wednesday - one of the first at Patriot Place - its ripples will be felt throughout the region.

"They are almost a tourist attraction," said Richard Fenker of the retail consulting firm Experian Business Strategies. "When they get this big, they become entertainment."

Bass Pro officials say they do not know how many people will show up for the grand opening, but note that 20,000 came to the grand opening of the chain’s first store in California this year.

The company specializes in fishing, boating, and hunting equipment, but it also sells apparel, camping and hiking gear, and general merchandise. The new store includes an indoor archery range.

In about a month, a sit-down restaurant is slated to open inside the Foxborough store. The store will also offer classes and demonstrations, and a 100-person meeting room that will be open to Scouting groups and sportsmen’s and environmental clubs.

"We consider ourselves more than just a sporting goods store," said Tom Keating, head of promotions for the Missouri-based company. "It’s a whole experience."

Company representatives note that while most customers will come from within 50 miles of the store, others will travel 500 miles to visit.

The arrival of Bass Pro Shops, which has 46 outlets in North America, can help and hurt local merchants, according to retail specialists.

"It can negatively impact smaller fishing and tackle stores and some of the outfitters, but as far as the economy goes, they tend to bring in more business than they would take away," said John Bemis, executive vice president and director of leasing and development for the real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle Retail.

Area merchants appear not to be worried about the arrival of Bass Pro, according to Susan McQuaid, president of the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Members of the chamber recently heard a presentation on Patriot Place from officials of the Kraft Group, which is developing the area next to the stadium as a shopping and entertainment center.

"People seem enthusiastic about what is taking place," McQuaid said. "Certainly, a Bass Pro Shop is something we haven’t seen in this region. They are trying to make it a place where people can bring their families."

Bass Pro Shops is not the only outdoor specialty retailer targeting the area. Two days after Bass Pro’s opening, L.L. Bean will open its second Massachusetts store at Mansfield Crossing on Route 140 in Mansfield.

While the two retailers will sell many of the same products, the scale of the operations will be very different. The L.L. Bean store will be about 25,000 square feet, while Bass Pro Shops will be six times larger. The other Massachusetts L.L. Bean store is in Burlington.

Laurie Brooks, spokeswoman for L.L. Bean, said the Freeport, Maine-based company has a strong and loyal customer base. She said the two national chains have the same objective.

"What we are all competing for is our customers’ time - using our products and getting out into the outdoors," Brooks said.

The market for outdoor products and services has been growing nationally, according to Denise Conroy-Galley, senior vice president of marketing and research for the Outdoor Channel. She noted that a recent US government survey identified 87 million Americans as outdoor enthusiasts, up 6 million from 2002.

Both L.L. Bean and Bass Pro Shops are planning big celebrations next week. The L.L. Bean store will open at 9 a.m. and stay open around the clock until 8 p.m. Nov. 18. The event is in the spirit of the L.L. Bean Freeport flagship store, which never closes.

Grand opening events for Bass Pro will start at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 and will include appearances by NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr., television fishing star Jimmy Houston, and New England Patriots Rodney Harrison, Mike Vrabel, and Matt Light.

Patriot Place, which is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2008, is to include a hotel, multiplex cinema, New England football hall of fame, medical office building, a dozen restaurants, and about 70 stores.

Australia warns Indonesian fishermen against trespassing

JAKARTA, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Despite mounting public outcry in Indonesia, the Australian government is adamant about continuing its zero-tolerance approach toward Indonesian fishermen caught in its waters.

Australia’s ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer, in a recent visit to East Nusa Tenggara province, reiterated his government’s stance on illegal fishing.

The country’s laws specifically target fishermen using modern boats and industrial-grade fishing equipment.

When fishermen are caught violating Australian maritime laws, authorities generally sink their boats and destroy their equipment, Farmer said.

"However, fishermen using traditional boats and equipment are still allowed to fish in Australian waters ... specifically designated for that purpose," he was quoted Thursday by local newspaper The Jakarta Post as saying.

In 2006, Australian authorities apprehended a total of 359 ships belonging to Indonesian fishermen. In 2005, the number of crews caught violating the country’s maritime laws numbered 279.

Farmer said in 2006, the Australian parliament ratified a law providing legal grounds for authorities to imprison foreign fishermen violating Australian laws.

Indonesian fishermen caught fishing in Australian waters face prison sentences of up to three years.

"We need to work together to ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources on both sides of the border," he said, adding that illegal fishing was a common problem that cost the Australian and Indonesian economies millions of dollars each year.

Try doing a web search on the words �fishing lodge� and you will come up with hundreds of thousands of matches. Visit any major sports show and you�ll find dozens of outfitters, each offering promises of the trip of a lifetime. How on earth do you narrow it down and find the fishing destination that�s just right for you?

Identify Your Priorities for you fishing trip...

The first step in selecting a destination is to sit down with everyone else going on the trip and discuss what it is that you want out of the experience. It�s not enough to decide you want great fishing, because that can mean very different things from one person to the next.

One person in your party might be delighted to catch 20 fish per day, while another might expect 20 fish an hour. This is the time to be perfectly clear and up-front, because the more honestly you communicate your wishes, the better the chances you will have a great trip.

Some important things to decide right from the beginning include:

What species of fish do you want to catch?

This sounds like a no-brainer, but it definitely needs to be discussed. If one member of your party really wants to catch lake trout and the resort you pick has lousy fishing for them, that person will be very disappointed. If the place you pick has fishing for multiple species, you should decide how much time and effort you want to apply to each. What matters most, and what matters least? Do you want to catch walleye, northern pike, bass, char?

Do you want lots of action? Or trophy fish?

Does great fishing mean catching a fish on every cast? Or would you go all day for one bite, provided that fish was a giant? Of course we would all like fast action with trophy fish, but it�s important to keep your expectations realistic. So between the two, which is most important? And what honestly constitutes a big fish for you? Would a 20-pound salmon make you smile? Or would it have to be a 50?

How are the fish caught?

Can you sight-fish? Or is it primarily deep trolling? Imagine how disappointing it would be to spend all winter watching people on TV fishing shows hammer big pike on topwaters, then find on your trip of a lifetime the only way to catch them is by deep trolling in 60 feet of water?

What is your realistic budget?

Let�s face it; money is a deciding factor for all of us. You need to be honest about what you�re prepared to spend, and also how you want to spend it. If you have $1,000 to blow on a trip, do you want a week at Lodge A, or three days at Lodge B which might offer more upscale accommodations or a better shot at a trophy fish?

Once you have decided exactly what kinds of fish you want to catch and how you want to catch them, you need to discuss the accommodations.

In order to get the kind of fishing your group wants, are you willing to rough it in a tent camp where you have to prepare your own food, or is a certain amount of creature comfort also a priority?

How important is a hot shower at the end of the day, or having someone else deal with the cooking and cleaning up? Can you live without a flush toilet? Would you rather bring your own boat?

Again, it�s important to be honest and realistic right up front.

Once you�ve established clear priorities for the fishing and the accommodations and set a rough budget, it�s time to start looking at what different lodges have to offer.

The species of fish you want to catch, the amount of time you want to be away and the amount of cash you have to spend should help focus your search to a general geographic area, while the priorities your group collectively identified should allow you to narrow your search within that geographic area fairly quickly. It's everyone's fishing trip ... so plan it well.

Now, it�s a matter of contacting fishing lodge operators within that region, and seeing what they have to offer.

Call The Government

State or provincial tourism departments are the best way to find fishing lodges within specific areas. If you�ve decided your group wants to go to Alaska to fish for salmon and steelhead, then start with a call to the Alaska department of tourism. They can send you all sorts of information on outfitters, general fishing information, plus stuff on license requirements, fishing regulations and such.

Selecting the right fishing trip destination is probably the single most important aspect of planning your fishing trip. Well, choosing the right fishing buddies is pretty important, also.

Alaska offers some of the most diverse and incredible fishing
opportunities in the world. You can drop a line into a roadside river and catch a nice size rainbow trout. Or charter a boat and reel in one of Alaska's giant Pacific halibut. You also can treat yourself with a freshly caught shellfish- shrimp, crab, clam.
There are almost 400 fish species in Alaska's fresh and salt waters including all five species of Pacific Salmon: King (chinook), Silver (coho), Red (sockeye), Chum (dog, keta), Pink (humpy).It is not uncommon to catch a 50-pound King salmon, the Alaska record was set by a fish weighing 97 pounds. Arctic greyling, sheefish and northern pike are easy to find in many inland streams. Diverse Alaska geographic areas offer adventure for everyone, give us various choices:
Interior Alaska. From mountains and rolling hills , river valleys covered with forests to the vast spaces of treeless tundra at higher altitudes and in the far north.
Temperaure varies greatly throughout the year, from -50 Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit) in the winter months to +30 Celsius (+86 Fahrenheit) during summers. There are just a few highways in the interior part of Alaska. Most of the area can only be reached by plane, boat or by foot. Almost every settlement has a good all weather airport served daily by small commercial air carriers.
Summer is warm but short, it is the best time for fishing in the land of the midnight sun. Pacific salmon enter the Yukon River in early June and move almost 2,400 km (1,500miles) up the river. They spawn along the way, provide best fishing in June and July for king salmon, and in August and September for silver salmon. Chum salmon can be caught throughout summer and fall.
Catch sheefish in July and August, especially in the Kobuk River. Best fishing season for lake trout and arctic char is May and early June. Ice fishing fans can take pleasure in good fishing for trout and burbot.
Southeast (the narrow and long part between the Pacific ocean and Canada). Consists of mainland and many treed mountainous islands along the coast. Inland waterways are well sheltered from the Pacific ocean. The main fishing trophies are all the five species of Pacific salmon and the Pacific halibut.
Rainbow, cutthroat, brook and steelhead trout are easy to catch in some inland streams. We can add arctic grayling and Dolly Varden to the list. On the coast crab and lingcod are available.
South and Southwest (to the south and west of the Yukon river). Mountainous inland with many rivers and lakes, ragged coastal line dotted with numerous islands. The region offers the widest variety of saltwater fishing and inland fishing in the state.
The Bristol Bay area is well known for outstanding rainbow trout fishing. Lake trout and northern pike are abundant in some lakes in the area. Arctic grayling, burbot, arctic char and Dolly Varden can be found in some waters. June and July yield the best fishing results for Pacific salmon. You can catch Pacific halibut in Gulf of Alaska and some inlets. Razor clams are best to dig from April to September, especially on the Kenai Peninsula. And you go to alaska fishing vacation.

FISHING LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
- An Alaska sport fishing license is required for all nonresidents 16 and over, and most residents from 16 to 59 (see below), to fish in all Alaskan fresh and salt waters. It is valid for a calendar year.
- Sport fishing licenses and king salmon stamps may be purchased from a license vendor (most sporting goods stores), by mail from the ADF&G Licensing Section, P.O. Box 25525, Juneau, AK 99802-5525, (907) 465-2376, or online. Licenses, stamps, and tags are non-refundable.
- A sport fishing license permits you to take or attempt to take any finfish or shellfish in fresh or salt waters, except anadromous (sea-run) king salmon, for which you must also have a current year's king salmon stamp. In order for the stamp to be valid, anglers must sign their name, in ink, across the face of the king salmon stamp and stick the stamp onto the back of their current year's sport fishing license.
WEATHER: On the whole Alaskan summers are cool, the average temperature is +14 deg.C (58 F) in summer and -12 deg.C (11 F) in winter but it can vary greatly between different regions of the state. Winters are cold and dark. Early spring can be cold, but often days warm to above freezing with a lot of sunshine. It receives midnight sunshine during the part of summer and goes into 24-hour darkness during the part of winter. GETTING THERE: There are direct or one-stop flights to Anchorage from many major US cities. Most of the Alaskan interior and coast are accessible by Alaska Aircraft Charters, Bush Pilots, Air Taxis. Many small villages and towns have all weather airports served daily.

Coastal waters this far north are also very cold and there is little hope for survival if your boat goes down in rough seas and you don't have the proper survival suits. It is always wise to consult the current conditions and predicted forecast for the area you will be boating in. Obtain detailed maps of the area beforehand. Do not forget to pack first-aid and survival kits as well as bear repellents.

Di tempat pemancingan pun saya hanya menonton saja. Tapi, ketika ada teman saya yang meminjamkan alat pancing, ya "terpaksa" saya ikut mancing juga. Waktu itu, karena memang hanya "formalitas", ya tak dapat ikan seekor pun. Tapi, perasaan saya waktu itu tidak kecewa, berbeda dengan sekarang, kalau tak dapat ikan, "bencana" buat saya, he he.

Selang setahun kemudian, saya diajak lagi mancing dalam rangka ulang tahun Sk Priangan. Tempat pemancingan saat itu di kolam milik bpk Keman di daerah Burujul Kota Tasik.

Saat itu, saya dapat delapan ekor ikan ukuran sekilogram tiga ekor. Jadi bisa dibayangkan besarnya ikan yang saya peroleh. Padahal ikan yang ditanam sekitar satu kuintal ikan mas (ukuran sekilo tiga atau sekilo empat).

Perolehan ikan mas saat itu, saya nilai cukup luar biasa bagi pemancing pemula seperti saya.

Nah, sejak saat itu, saya menjadi ketagihan ikut mancing dengan teman-teman. Kalau ada ulang tahun Sk Priangan selalu diadakan lomba mancing. Dan sejak saat itu selalu "pede", pasti tak pernah di "zong", alis selalu saja dapat ikan.
